This October, Georgia’s hemp industry underwent a transformative shift with new regulations designed to legitimize and regulate hemp products across the state. These changes, stemming from Senate Bill 494, have sparked both opportunities and challenges for businesses and consumers alike. Joe Salome, co-owner of The Georgia Hemp Company™, was recently featured in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution to discuss these developments and their impact on the thriving hemp market.
As of October 1, Georgia hemp businesses must comply with strict regulations, including:
While these rules aim to enhance consumer safety and establish clear industry standards, they’ve also significantly limited product options. Salome expressed concern over the constraints, comparing the restrictions to having “a bunch of different types of milk but only being able to sell one.”
“We want to see this industry normalized,” Salome stated. “But overregulating limits choices for businesses and consumers, which doesn’t spur growth.”
Despite these restrictions, the hemp beverage category is emerging as a shining star in the industry. The Georgia Hemp Company™ is adapting to these changes by focusing on hemp-infused drinks, tinctures, gummies, and creams, ensuring customers still have access to high-quality, innovative products. Nonalcoholic hemp beverages, in particular, are gaining momentum, with many in the industry, including Katherine Russell of the Georgia Department of Agriculture, labeling them as “the next big thing.”
Salome emphasized the need for greater flexibility within the law, advocating for expanded edible options, larger serving sizes, and the reintroduction of hemp flower products. At the same time, he highlighted the importance of fair enforcement, noting that some businesses, such as gas stations, continue to sell prohibited products without consequences.
For Georgia consumers, these new regulations bring both clarity and reassurance. Every hemp product must now undergo rigorous testing, ensuring transparency about THC levels and product contents. While the availability of certain items has been reduced, the quality and legitimacy of the hemp industry in Georgia have taken a significant step forward.
At The Georgia Hemp Company™, the commitment to providing safe, high-quality hemp products remains unwavering. Whether you’re looking for a calming beverage, premium Delta 8 and Delta 9 gummies, or soothing topicals, the company continues to offer a curated selection designed to enhance wellness and relaxation.
As the industry evolves, The Georgia Hemp Company™ is proud to lead the way, advocating for consumer choice and a vibrant, innovative hemp market.
