Dry January and the Rise of Cannabis and CBD Alternatives

What is Dry January?

Dry January, an initiative started by Alcohol Change UK in 2013, has seen a significant rise in participation over the years. From just 4,000 participants in its inception year to a staggering 130,000 in 2021, this movement encourages adults to abstain from alcohol for the month of January. In 2022, a survey by CGA, a food and beverage research firm, indicated a remarkable increase, with 35% of adults of drinking age in the U.S. participating, up from 21% in the previous year.

Survey Says: Cannabis and CBD are Popular Alternatives

A 2023 survey by CivicScience revealed a fascinating trend among adults participating in Dry January: the substitution of alcohol with cannabis, CBD, and other related products. The survey, involving over 900 adults, found that 21% of those abstaining from alcohol turned to cannabis or CBD products. This figure outstripped other non-alcoholic alternatives, making cannabis and CBD the most popular substitutes during Dry January.

Trends in Cannabis and CBD Usage

The CivicScience survey highlighted intriguing age-related trends in the substitution of alcohol with cannabis products. Young adults aged 21-24 were the most likely to replace alcohol with cannabis, with 34% opting for this alternative. This preference decreases with age, with 24% of adults aged 25-34 and 22% of those aged 35-54 choosing cannabis. Notably, only 6% of adults aged 55 and above reported selecting cannabis over alcohol.

Other Non-Alcoholic Alternatives

While cannabis and CBD products topped the list, other non-alcoholic substitutes were also popular. Non-alcoholic beverages and soda/seltzer products each accounted for 20% of the preferences. However, kombucha, another alternative, was the choice of only 6% of the respondents.

Locations for Trying Non-Alcoholic Beverages

The survey further explored where people were more likely to try non-alcoholic beverages like mocktails or alcohol-free beer and wine. It was found that 18% were more inclined to try these at home, while 17% preferred restaurants. Interestingly, Gen Z adults showed a greater likelihood of sampling non-alcoholic beverages both at home (36%) and in restaurants (26%).
